Q1. Does Digital LOTO comply with OSHA regulations?

Smartlox Digital LOTO is engineered to align with OSHA 29 CFR 1910.147 standards for control of hazardous energy. While OSHA does not currently reference digital lockout technologies explicitly — nor does it certify third-party solutions, Smartlox has mapped its architecture and workflows to meet or exceed the intent of OSHA’s core requirements. A typical Lockout-Tagout procedure involves specific steps to de-energize equipment safely.

Smartlox follows a secure software development lifecycle (SDLC) that incorporates security considerations throughout the development process. The platform is built with enterprise-grade architecture, aligned to ISO27001 standards.

Yes. As a digital solution, Smartlox relies on network connectivity to deliver real-time data sync, remote control features, and centralized oversight. When interacting with a LOTO lock, the user must have some form of network connectivity before the app will allow the lock to open. Smartlox is developing a completely offline solution for environments where network connectivity is unavailable.

Q4. Are the locks intrinsically safe?

Yes. Smartlox offers two intrinsically safe LOTO lock models, engineered for use in hazardous environments.

  • ATEX Zone 1 Certified (EU)
  • UL913 Intrinsically Safe (US)
  • IECEx unit-level certification can be arranged at an additional cost to meet site/region specific regulatory requirements.

Q5. What if the battery goes flat in the field?

The locks feature a jump start terminal at the base of the lock. Holding a 9v battery against these pins will give the lock enough power to wake up and communicate with a users’ device. Importantly, this function is not a manual override and will not automatically open the lock. Note, the jump start terminals cannot be used within a hazardous environment.

Yes. Smartlox features robust role-based access control that allows you to govern permissions and access levels for all users — and segment functionality based on various criteria. Permissions are centrally managed via the Nyckel Web App, giving administrators granular control. Every interaction is timestamped, logged, and traceable, ensuring full accountability and compliance with internal safety protocols.

By leveraging our API capabilities, the system can also connect to third party personnel management systems to align users training and capabilities to their profile in Smartlox - meaning only trained, capable and authorized people are allowed to perform lockouts.
